For 29 years, Lewis Landscape Services has been a cornerstone of the landscaping community, enhancing residential properties throughout Beaverton, Oregon, Portland, Oregon, Lake Oswego, and Washington County. Since 1996, we’ve been dedicated to providing comprehensive landscaping and hardscaping services, with a particular emphasis on Outdoor Lighting and, more importantly, exceptional Outdoor Lighting Design. While many landscape lighting installation companies in Portland, Oregon and Beaverton, Oregon, offer outdoor lighting installation, we believe that true artistry lies in the design. That’s the difference between our Outdoor Lighting installations and our competition.
We’ve honed our skills for almost three decades, meticulously studying Outdoor Lighting Design principles and executing countless custom outdoor lighting projects. Our expertise surpasses not only other landscaping companies but also many Outdoor Lighting Companies specializing solely in Outdoor Lighting in Portland, Oregon. Read on to discover the secrets behind our award-winning Outdoor Lighting Design techniques
Our approach to outdoor lighting design transcends mere illumination. We view it as an art form, carefully crafting a nocturnal symphony of light and shadow that accentuates the beauty of your home and landscape. By strategically placing fixtures, we create depth, highlight architectural features, and evoke a desired mood—whether it’s a tranquil oasis, a vibrant entertainment space, or a secure and welcoming environment. Our designs seamlessly blend functionality and aesthetics, ensuring your property is both safe and captivating at night.
Effective Outdoor Lighting Design hinges on the principle of subtlety. The goal is not to mimic Disneyland, but to accentuate the inherent beauty of your landscape, structures, and home with carefully placed landscape lighting. Balance is the key to a well-done outdoor landscape lighting project. We strive to create a harmonious scene where the outdoor lighting enhances, not overpowers, the natural surroundings. This philosophy guides every Landscape Lighting project we undertake.
Achieving this balance requires a nuanced approach to fixture selection. Unlike many Portland Landscape Lighting Companies that employ a one-size-fits-all approach, we recognize that each element demands specific consideration. Smaller trees and structures benefit from softer, more intimate illumination, while larger features require brighter, more powerful fixtures. The beam spread is equally crucial, ensuring the light effectively covers the intended area. We meticulously select each fixture to create the desired effect, resulting in a truly captivating Outdoor Landscape Lighting scheme.
Color temperature plays a vital role in creating a natural and inviting ambiance. Many LED Outdoor Lighting options emit a harsh, cool light. We prefer the warm, inviting glow of 2700k LEDs, reminiscent of classic incandescent lighting. This choice ensures your trees, features, and structures are bathed in a soft, welcoming light. At Lewis Landscape Services, we believe that exceptional Outdoor Lighting transcends the ordinary. While pathway lights and spotlights serve a purpose, they represent only a fraction of the possibilities. Our Outdoor Lighting Design expertise extends to illuminating key features throughout your landscape. Structures, water features, ledges, steps, patio lighting and architectural details of your home all contribute to the overall aesthetic. By highlighting these elements, we elevate your Landscape Lighting from basic to breathtaking.
Up-Lighting is a staple of Outdoor Lighting, effectively illuminating trees, structures, and architectural elements. However, we believe in exploring the full spectrum of lighting effects. Down-lighting, also known as moonlighting, is a less common technique that, when executed properly, can be equally stunning. By positioning lights high within trees, we cast intricate shadows on the ground, highlighting the tree’s form and creating a magical ambiance. This technique also provides soft, functional illumination for pathways and patio lighting, often surpassing the effectiveness of traditional pathway lights. Down-lighting from the peaks of your home can dramatically accentuate its architectural beauty.
We also employ techniques like grazing, where light gently washes across the surface of a hedge or wall, and silhouetting, where backlighting creates dramatic contrasts. Underwater lighting adds an ethereal touch to ponds and water features. By combining these various effects, we create a dynamic and captivating Outdoor Lighting experience.
While landscape lighting often takes center stage, the architectural elements of your home deserve equal consideration. Outdoor home lighting is just as important as landscape lighting. At Lewis Landscape Services, we believe that true artistry lies in creating a cohesive lighting design that seamlessly integrates your home with its surroundings. We specialize in architectural lighting techniques that accentuate the unique character and beauty of your home.
Down-Lighting from the peaks of your home creates a dramatic effect, casting a warm glow and highlighting architectural details. Up-Lighting or Down-Lighting on corners, siding sections, and entryways adds depth and dimension. Columns framing the front door can be beautifully illuminated with strategically placed fixtures, creating a welcoming and elegant entrance.
Our team is highly skilled in Architectural Lighting design and installation. We carefully consider the style of your home, its unique features, and your personal preferences to create a customized lighting scheme that enhances its curb appeal and creates a lasting impression. For accent lighting, we exclusively utilize 100% solid brass fixtures from Kichler Landscape Lighting. These fixtures are not only aesthetically pleasing but also incredibly durable. Unlike plastic or aluminum alternatives, brass fixtures withstand the elements and maintain their beauty for years to come. Kichler’s LED Outdoor Lighting also features Variable Light Output (VLO), allowing you to adjust the brightness level directly at the fixture. This feature is particularly valuable for illuminating growing trees.
Furthermore, our Kichler accent lights are 100% potted and sealed, preventing moisture intrusion – a common cause of failure in other Low Voltage Landscape Lighting systems. This ensures exceptional longevity, with fixtures lasting 20-25 years without needing a bulb replacement.
While path and spread lights provide essential illumination for walkways and driveways, we are mindful of their limitations. These fixtures, regardless of quality, are susceptible to damage. Therefore, we prioritize alternative methods whenever possible, such as Down-lighting or utilizing the ambient glow from nearby up-lit trees to illuminate pathway, patio or driveway areas.
That said, there are still times when there isn’t any other good way to illuminate the ground other than a pathway light. And in those cases it’s very important to choose the right fixture. One common mistake homeowners and landscapers make in placing pathway lights is: they choose a fixture that isn’t high enough off the ground or bright enough to illuminate a very large area. The result is what we call ‘The Runway Affect’ – which is unsightly. If you choose the right fixture that is high enough off the ground and bright enough to throw light further, then you can minimize the amount of pathway lights needed. When path lights are the only option available, we select fixtures with ample height and brightness to avoid the unsightly “runway effect.” Our Kichler path lights stand 21″ tall, illuminating a 12-16′ span, minimizing the number of fixtures required. We also strategically place them in a zig-zag pattern for a more balanced and visually appealing effect and to avoid the “runway effect.”
The Kichler pathway lights we use are made of solid brass or an airplane-grade aluminum with a powder-coated finish that lasts for decades. These are just some of the landscape lights Portland has to offer.
Our expertise extends beyond the typical accent and path lighting to encompass a wide array of fixtures designed to elevate your outdoor living experience. Imagine the warm glow of solid brass tiki torch lights casting dancing shadows across your patio, or the elegant charm of post lights and lanterns illuminating pathways and entryways. We can even seamlessly integrate your existing home and column lights into a comprehensive outdoor lighting scheme, ensuring a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic.
For covered spaces, we offer stylish and functional Kichler ceiling fans with integrated lighting, providing both illumination and a gentle breeze for ultimate comfort. To further enhance your outdoor oasis, we provide a curated selection of table lights, shed lights, and hanging lights, allowing you to create the perfect ambiance for dining, relaxation, or entertaining. No matter the size or style of your outdoor space, we have the expertise and fixtures to transform it into a nighttime haven.
Our Outdoor Lighting Systems are powered by Kichler Contractor-Grade stainless steel transformers, equipped with WiFi connectivity and a user-friendly smartphone app. Control your Low Voltage Lighting with ease, program schedules, and even integrate with home automation devices like Alexa and Google Home. The “set it and forget it” dusk-to-dawn feature ensures your Outdoor Lighting operates seamlessly.
This transformer also comes with Zoning Capabilities – which allows us to create 3 separate zones, all with independent on/off times. For instance, you may want your lighting around your driveway and front walkway to be illuminated all night, while the back yard or side yard areas you may want to only run until midnight. With zoning, you can customize each zone in these ways, all programmed from your smart phone.

A. Outdoor Lighting offers a multitude of benefits, enhancing your property in several key ways:
A. Absolutely! Kichler’s innovative design addresses the primary causes of LED lamp failure: moisture intrusion and overheating. Their fully potted and sealed fixtures are 100% waterproof, ensuring long-term performance. Advanced heat-sink technology prevents overheating, further extending the lifespan of the LEDs. Should a fixture malfunction within the first 15 years, Kichler will replace it free of charge.
A. As the world’s leading lighting manufacturer, Kichler employs rigorous testing procedures to ensure the longevity of their products. Through accelerated aging tests, they can accurately predict the lifespan of their LEDs, which is estimated to be 20-25 years in typical residential use. Our own field experience with Kichler fixtures over the past 5 years has further validated their exceptional durability.
A. The lamps are designed to last the lifetime of the fixture. In the unlikely event that a fixture fails within the 15-year warranty period, we simply replace the entire unit. This hassle-free approach ensures you enjoy uninterrupted Outdoor Lighting for years to come.
A. Our energy-efficient Kichler LED Lighting Systems are incredibly cost-effective to operate. Most systems consume less than $5 per month in energy.
A. The cost of Outdoor Lighting installation varies depending on several factors, including the size and complexity of your property, the number of fixtures and features you desire, and the specific types of lighting effects you want to achieve. We work closely with our clients to design systems that align with their budget and needs. Our systems typically start at around $2,000 and can range upwards to $15,000 or more for extensive and elaborate Outdoor Lighting designs.
A. While DIY outdoor lighting kits are readily available, particularly solar-powered options, professional installation offers significant advantages. Many DIY kits utilize inferior materials and may require frequent replacement. Solar-powered lights, while convenient, often lack the brightness and versatility to effectively illuminate architectural details or provide consistent performance. At Lewis Landscape Services, we bring artistry and expertise to every Outdoor Lighting project. Our skilled technicians are well-versed in design principles, product selection, and safe electrical installation practices. We ensure your system is not only beautiful but also safe and built to last.
A. We take great care to minimize disruption to your landscape during the installation process. Our experienced technicians are trained to work meticulously, ensuring minimal impact on your lawn and plantings. When burying wires, we create small, precise trenches to conceal the wiring without damaging your existing landscape. In most cases, your grass will recover quickly with normal rainfall, leaving no lasting trace of the installation.
